The Cathedral of Christ the Savoir

It was built (1839-1883) to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon.
Demolished in 1931 to make way for Stalin's Palace of Soviets. (never built)
Later the excavated area became the world's largest open-air swimming pool.
Today's Cathedral was built between 1995 and1997 and was consecrated in 2000.
